Bergenia syn. Megasea, common names of Pigsqueak, Elephant’s ears, Winter begonia, Siberian tea is a clump-forming, evergreen perennial from meadows, rocky moorland, and moist woodland in Central and E. Asia. They have tough, thick rhizomes and distinctive rosettes with leathery, glossy leaves, many coloring well in winter. The clustered flowers are funnel to bell shaped with 5 petals, usually ½ to 1 in. (1.5-2.5cm) across, on short, branched, often red or purple flower stems. Produced mainly in spring.
